Dental Dentures Saint-Lazare

Dentures are removable artificial teeth designed to replace missing teeth. If you have lost some or all of your teeth due to injury, illness, or oral health issues, your dentist or prosthodontist may recommend dentures as a replacement option.

Types of Dentures: Complete and Partial

There are two main types of dentures: complete dentures and partial dentures. Complete dentures replace all the teeth in an arch, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures are used when all teeth in an arch are missing. They can be made for the upper or lower jaw and are held in place by suction and/or adhesive. They are removable, just like partial dentures.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are designed for situations where some natural teeth remain. They are a common solution when surrounding teeth cannot support a bridge or when multiple teeth are missing.

Construction of Dentures

Complete dentures consist of an acrylic base that resembles natural gums, with acrylic or porcelain teeth attached. The base is custom-fitted to the contours of the mouth to ensure stability while eating, speaking, and swallowing.

Partial dentures feature a metal framework with teeth attached in the missing areas. Clasps or arms fit around remaining natural teeth to provide additional stability.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are removable dentures anchored to dental implants in the jawbone, providing superior stability compared to conventional dentures. They are ideal for patients who have lost all teeth in an arch but have sufficient jawbone to support implants.

Denture Cleaning and Maintenance

  1. Daily cleaning is essential to maintain dentures and prevent oral health issues.
  2. Remove dentures and rinse under running water to eliminate food particles.
  3. Use a denture brush or soft toothbrush with mild soap or denture cleaner to clean all surfaces and in between the teeth.
  4. Clean your gums and any remaining natural teeth while the dentures are out of your mouth.
